Discovering Japan: A 12-Day Personal Journey from Tokyo to Niseko

Discovering Japan: A 12-Day Personal Journey from Tokyo to Niseko

From the bustling cityscapes of Tokyo to the serene, snowy slopes of Niseko, my husband and I embarked on a 12-day journey through Japan that was as rich in history as it was in culture. Here’s a deeper look into our unforgettable adventure through Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Niseko.

Tokyo: The Heartbeat of Japan

Our adventure began in Tokyo, a city where the past and future collide in an exhilarating dance of lights, sounds and flavours. We wandered through the neon-lit streets of Shibuya, marvelled at the serene beauty of the Meiji Shrine, and indulged in some of the freshest sushi we've ever tasted at the bustling Tsukiji Market. Tokyo dazzled us with its dynamic energy, each district showcasing its own unique charm and history.

Kyoto: Stepping Into a Painting

Next, we headed to Kyoto, the historical soul of Japan, where ancient temples and traditional tea houses paint scenes reminiscent of a delicate Japanese watercolour. Our stay at The Good Nature Hotel was nothing short of spectacular. Nestled in the heart of the city, this eco-friendly hotel not only offered comfort and luxury but also easy access to some of Kyoto’s most iconic sights.

Good Nature Hotel
Gion District
We were enchanted by the nearby Gion district, known as the city's geisha district. Wandering through Gion’s atmospheric streets in the evening was like walking through a live museum, each turn revealing beautifully preserved machiya houses and a chance to glimpse geiko and maiko in their exquisite kimonos. Just a short walk from our hotel was the vibrant Nishiki Market. Known as Kyoto’s kitchen, this bustling market was a culinary adventure, offering everything from fresh seafood to local specialties.

Our second day here we were out to discover the surrounding areas of Kyoto and what they have to offer. Just a quick 30-minute train ride away, this charming city is a hidden gem that’s bursting with culture, history, and of course, incredible green tea!

Here’s a little sneak peek into our day trip:

Our first stop, the stunning Byodoin Temple! This UNESCO World Heritage Site is not just a treat for the eyes with its beautiful architecture, but it also has a rich history that dates to the 11th century.

Uji is famous for its high-quality matcha, so we visited a local tea house to enjoy some delicious matcha sweets and a refreshing cup of green tea. Trust me, the flavours are out of this world!

So if you’re in Kyoto and looking for a quick day trip, Uji should be at the top of your list! It’s a perfect blend of history, culture and nature.

On our next day, we set out on an unforgettable hike from Kurama to Kibune, soaking in the stunning beauty of Kyoto's nature.
Our journey covered approximately 8km of scenic trails, with three breathtaking temple stops along the way! Each temple offered a unique glimpse into the rich history of the area, making our trek even more special.

Hike Kumara to Kibune
Kumara
From the serene Kurama-dera Temple to the peaceful path winding through the lush forest, every moment was a reminder of how enchanting Japan can be. Arriving in Kibune, we treated ourselves to a delicious meal by the river. This was such a fantastic and unexpected day with nearly no tourists, so pop this one on your list for something different. Definitely was worth it.

Osaka: Japan’s Kitchen

Osaka was next, a city that wears its heart on its sleeve, vibrant and bustling with energy. We stayed at the fabulous Citadines Namba Osaka, perfectly located to explore the city’s renowned food scene. A short walk from our hotel brought us to the lively streets of nbori, the epicentre of Osaka’s culinary universe.

One of the highlights of our time in Osaka was visiting the iconic Osaka Castle. Nestled amidst sprawling parklands with moats and stone walls, the castle stands as a testament to the power and history of the region. The view from the top offered panoramic vistas of Osaka, making it a memorable part of our visit.

Niseko: A Winter Escape

Finally, we reached Niseko, where the landscapes transformed into a pristine white paradise. Staying at the Aya Resort, we were treated to first-class amenities and ski facilities right at our doorstep. Evenings in Niseko offered their own charm. One delightful discovery was the vibrant array of food trucks near our resort, serving everything from hot ramen to gourmet burgers. It was a unique and fun alternative to traditional dining, especially since many local restaurants were fully booked.

After the slopes, we enjoyed exploring Niseko’s charming town, warming up with delicious street food, and unwinding in soothing onsen baths. This combination of thrilling ski days and cozy, flavourful nights made our stay in Niseko unforgettable.

Reflecting on our 12 days in Japan

Each moment—from the neon lights of Tokyo to the snowflakes of Niseko—felt like a discovery of something wonderful and new. This trip wasn't just about seeing different places; it was about experiencing them, with each destination weaving its way into our memories. Japan is a land of contrasts and harmony, and we are looking forward to going back in May 2025 with our small group tour.
